Overview

SPIE Power Services provides comprehensive operations and asset management for the 190MW combined cycle Yarnima Power Station. Located in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia, this critical facility supplies dedicated power to BHP's islanded network, supporting their extensive iron ore mining operations and the local town of Newman.

The challenge

BHP required a highly reliable operations and maintenance partner capable of managing a complex, isolated power asset in a demanding remote environment. The facility needed to maintain strict safety standards while navigating variable load demands from the surrounding mining infrastructure and customer network.

Our approach

We established a robust asset management system supported by predictive maintenance techniques to anticipate equipment needs and reduce downtime. By deploying a dedicated, locally integrated team, we took full responsibility for operations, major outages, environmental management and capital project execution.

The solution

We implemented several targeted reliability projects, including a Fast Acting Response Controller (FARC) to improve performance during load changes, and a targeted sulphur removal project to enhance turbine stability. We also integrated the water treatment plant with the station's control systems to streamline fault finding. Our exceptional delivery led BHP to renegotiate our contract via a sole source agreement, completely bypassing the market.

Key outcomes

What the project delivered

  • Maintained a flawless safety record with over 3,763 days (10 years) recordable injury-free.

  • Achieved a 36% reduction in CO2 emissions within the first two years through operational protocol changes.

  • Delivered significant gas consumption savings, reducing annual fuel costs by several million dollars.
