Overview
SPIE Power Services was engaged by Synergy to prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation and decommissioning plan for the Kwinana Power Station in Western Australia. We delivered all engineering, estimating, and scheduling to manage the facility's complex demolition.
The challenge
Decommissioning a major power station requires absolute clarity on scope, cost, and environmental impact. Synergy needed a partner capable of defining distinct decommissioning options and managing the highly sensitive triple bottom line impact — economic, environmental, and social — of the remediation process.
Our approach
We assembled an integrated team comprising civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers alongside decommissioning and environmental restoration specialists. Working collaboratively during the early planning phases, we undertook a detailed options analysis to evaluate and define the eventual preferred remediation option.
The solution
We developed a complete Rehabilitation Plan, including a Class 1/2a cost estimate and a Level 2-3 schedule. By utilising our advanced decision and risk assessment process, we rapidly eliminated unviable options and optimised the final work scopes to achieve the desired end-state safely and efficiently.
Key outcomes
What the project delivered
Successfully defined and scheduled the comprehensive decommissioning and demolition of all electrical scopes.
Provided a highly accurate Class 1/2a cost estimate (±30%) to secure budget certainty.
Delivered a complete triple bottom line appreciation of the remediation process to manage risks effectively.
