Overview
SPIE Power Services delivered the complete decommissioning of the Esperance Gas Distribution System (EGDS) and managed the demolition of the Esperance Power Station for Foresight Group in Western Australia. The project encompassed the safe isolation, purging and decommissioning of live gas mains within a residential environment, followed by full project management of the power station demolition contractor.
The challenge
Decommissioning active gas distribution infrastructure within a populated residential area carries significant safety, regulatory and community risks. Foresight required a partner with the technical expertise to safely isolate and purge live gas systems, disconnect customer piping installations, and coordinate closely with regulators, all while managing the concurrent demolition of the adjacent power station.
Our approach
We structured the project across three phases, managing gas system decommissioning and power station demolition in a coordinated sequence. We worked closely with the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) to streamline planning and approvals, reducing regulatory delays. Our team took full HSE ownership across all activities within the residential environment.
The solution
We safely disconnected customer piping installations from connected services, installed mains purge points onto buried infrastructure, and isolated the EGDS from the upstream high-pressure gas supply. Following complete venting and nitrogen purging of the gas mains, we transitioned to full project management of the power station demolition contractor, overseeing safe and compliant site clearance.
