Overview
SPIE Power Services provides operations and maintenance services for the Collie Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) — one of Australia's largest grid-scale storage facilities at 2,400MWh. Located adjacent to the existing Collie Power Station in Western Australia, the site is operated for Synergy and comprises 640 CATL battery units and 160 power electronic inverters.
The challenge
As a newly commissioned, large-scale BESS facility, Collie required an experienced O&M partner capable of managing complex battery and power electronics systems from day one. Synergy needed a partner who could deliver early transition services during commissioning, establish robust operational procedures, and ensure safe, reliable performance from the outset.
Our approach
Building on our existing 20-year relationship with Synergy at the adjacent Collie Power Station, we provided Early Transition Services to support the development of operations and maintenance procedures, operational standards and commissioning support. This ensured the facility was set up for safe, optimised operation from first charge.
The solution
We assumed full O&M responsibility for the site in 2025, managing day-to-day operations, preventive maintenance, and capital projects across the CATL battery fleet and inverter systems. We also identified and initiated targeted safety and reliability improvement projects to support ongoing performance optimisation.
Key outcomes
What the project delivered
Delivered Early Transition Services to develop O&M procedures, standards and commissioning support for one of Australia's largest grid-scale BESS facilities.
Assumed full O&M responsibility from 2025, leveraging our long-term Synergy relationship and proximity to Collie Power Station.
Initiated safety and reliability improvement projects to optimise plant performance from commencement of operations.
