Overview

SPIE Power Services has provided full technical, operational, engineering and maintenance services for the Collie Power Station in Western Australia since 2005. Operating for Synergy, Collie is the largest generator in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) market at 343MW, and is scheduled to retire in 2027.

The challenge

Synergy required a long-term O&M partner capable of operating a major subcritical coal plant safely and reliably across its full commercial life, while adapting the facility to the changing energy landscape. This included improving plant performance, managing environmental obligations, and preparing the station for flexible operation in an increasingly renewable-heavy grid.

Our approach

We took full responsibility for all operational, engineering and maintenance activities across the site. We focused on targeted reliability improvements, capital project delivery and proactive environmental management. Our long-term partnership with Synergy has enabled us to plan and execute complex upgrades aligned with the station's commercial objectives.

The solution

We designed and implemented a plant upgrade that increased generating capacity from 325MW to 343MW, delivering immediate commercial benefits to Synergy. We executed a Half-Life Overhaul to ensure safe and reliable operations through to end of commercial life while improving environmental performance. We also successfully implemented a Flexible Operations program, enabling the station to operate effectively within a renewable-integrated grid.

Key outcomes

What the project delivered

  • Delivered a capacity upgrade from 325MW to 343MW, increasing commercial output for Synergy.

  • Completed a Half-Life Overhaul ensuring operational reliability and improved environmental performance to end of commercial life.

  • Implemented a Flexible Operations program to support integration with the renewable energy grid.

  • Maintained a 20-year partnership with Synergy, with operations continuing through to the station's planned 2027 retirement.
